  1. Parachute Project Ethan Doerflein Michael Wiener

  2. Understand We were tasked with building a parachute that would deploy from a probe. It would have to be able to land the egg softly in the grass, similar to NASA space probes landing on other planets.

  3. Explore After alot of research we detirmined what material would be best for the parachute (Nylon) and what shape of probe would contain the parachute the best (Cube)

  4. Define We made sure that our probe would meet the 200 gram weight limit and that we had a working drogue chute. We solved the following equation to find the best surface area for our parachute: Acceleration = 9.81 m/s^2 - (SurfaceArea)(Mass)

  5. Ideate We made the following designs for our parachute

  6. Ideate

  7. Testing Drop Time Weight Terminal V. Drop 1: 1.25s 2.53g 2.9 Drop 2: 3.45 .94 1.97 Drop 3: 3.60 .92 1.87

  8. Design Description Our payload chamber is a box in which our parachute is folded and set into. When the box is dropped the drag chute opens and pulls our main chute out of the box. When that chute opens it pulls the egg out of the box and descends gently onto the grass below.

  9. Solution After discovering that the original probe design would not work we came up with another probe that would detach completely from the chute and allow for the lightest possible landing. We also moved the location of our drogue chute so that it would provide a better opening of the main chute.
