  3. KSU Research and Extension • The KSU 1890 Land Grant Program works to resolve agricultural, educational, economic, and social problems of the people of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, especially limited-resource persons and families, in urban and rural areas.

  4. Aquaculture • Program of Distinction, ranked top 5 in the U.S. • National and international leader in: • Largemouth bass culture • freshwater prawn • saltwater shrimp • koi • paddlefish • fish meal replacement • aquaponics • disease diagnostics • water quality • pond development and management

Sustainable Agriculture and Human Health • Organic program: top 20 in the nation • Research projects in: • Agroforestry • Entomology • Alternative pesticides and water quality • Soil science • Geographic Information Systems • Meat goat production • Organic vegetable production/Hemp • Alternative fruit and nut crops: pawpaw • Urban agriculture • Apiculture • Livestock Nutrition

  6. Human Health, Nutrition, and Food Safety • Research projects in: • Value-Added products • obesity and health • eating habits of children and adults • DNA technologies for assessing food safety • new methods to cleanse fruit, fish, and vegetables of bacteria

KSU Teaching in Agriculture • Undergraduate degree in Agriculture, Food, and Environment with Options in: • Agriculture Systems • Agribusiness • Aquaculture Systems • Environmental Systems • Food Systems and Nutritional Sciences • Master of Science degrees in Aquaculture Studies and Environmental Studies • Student research opportunities are a priority

  9. Required Federal and State Matching for 1890 Programs • 7 CFR 3419.1 defines “matching funds” as “funds from non-Federal sources made available by the State to the eligible institutions ... [for] programs or activities that fall within the purposes of agricultural research and cooperative extension under sections 1444 and 1445 of NARETPA ... or [for] qualifying educational activities. Matching funds means cash contributions and excludes in-kind matching contributions.”

Special Highlights • Legislators increased matching funds in 2016-2018 allowing KSU to receive $3,300,000 in additional USDA federal funds to help meet stakeholder needs. • Since 2016 KSU added 10 new program leaders in: • Expanded Extension programing to serve the needs of small and limited resource farmers and vulnerable populations Urban Agriculture Forestry Livestock Nutrition and Health Poultry Science Animal Health 4-H and Youth Development Community Development Family and Consumer Sciences Entrepreneurship Ag Communication

Matching Situation for 2018-2020 Biennium Based on HB 200 FY2019: $3,684,700 USDA Research Allocation $3,537,700 Research State Match ($147,000 short) $3,261,000 USDA Extension Allocation $3,114,000 Extension State Match ($147,000 short) Additional matching funds would allow hiring of an Assistant Professor in Vegetable Breeding and four Extension Agents (Horticulture, Small Farms, and FCS)
