  2. General Description • Scabies is a very itchy skin rash with tiny blisters or sores cause by mites.

  3. Scientific Description • Sarcoptesscabiei, or itch mites, burrow into the stratum corneum, or top layer of skin, causing an allergic reaction.

  4. Symptoms • Rash with blisters or sores • Children and older adults have worst itching • Many take several weeks for symptoms to appear • Often affects family members at the same time

  5. Cause • SarcoptesScabiei/itch mite • Spread by close contact with those infected

  6. Cure • Doctor prescribed cream or lotion • Ivermectin- ant parasitic medication • Wash all bedding and clothes

  7. Worst Case Scenario • The itching can lead to open wounds that can get infected and left untreated are potentially fatal.

  8. Facts • Can be passed between humans and pets • 300 million cases per year • Frequently affects homeless, but occurs in all socioeconomic groups
