  2. New America • The thirteen colonies were divided into the New England, Middle and Southern. • NH, MA, CT, RI • NY, NJ, PA, DE • MD, VA, NC, SC, GA

  3. Revolutionary War • The Revolutionary war was the second key step, after colonization, in creating a nation. • The actual war was from 1775 - 1783, although events leading up to the war began 1754 with the French and Indian War.

  4. Foundations of Democracy • The document beginning with the famous line, “We the People”, was the final straw of defiance by the colonists and officially began the Revolutionary war.

  5. Ratification of the United States Constitution Occurred in Washington DC on September 17, 1787.

  6. Creating an American Government • Having currency created at a mint contributes to a stable and thriving nation. • It also allows citizens to buy goods and services.

  7. Expanding the nation • Initially annexation of territory such as TX was looked at as a threat to the balance between states supporting or against slavery. • Winning the Mexican-American War brought the geographic areas of TX, NM, AZ, CO, NV, CO, and WY into the United States.

  8. Settling the West • The discovery of gold at Sutter’s mill helped the population shift from east to west filling the less populated areas of the United States. • This was beneficial for defense against Mexico, obtaining natural resources, and building our nation.

  9. Native Americans • The westward expansion encroached on the lives of Native Americans. • This created tension and several wars. • The Native American’s way of life was destroyed and the United States citizens gained unchallenged access to land and resources.

  10. The Young Republic • The Alien and Sedition Act of 1798 was an early challenge to freedom of the press under the First Amendment. • The VA and KY resolution provided that a state could ignore a federal law if they found it unconstitutional. • When Jefferson became president he pardoned anyone jailed from the Alien and Sedition Act.

  11. My Choices • The thirteen colonies showed the beginning. • The Revolutionary War created our independence. • The constitution is the framework of our country. • It’s ratification completed one phase and began another chapter. We went from separating to creating. • Currency allowed us to stand alone. • Expansion added to our resource. • Settling it allowed us to use it. • Removed the Native American obstacle (although inhumanely). • The Young Republic tested the amendments and showed the strength of the constitution.
