  3. What started it all ?????? • The Renaissance • Was an Intellectual movement focusing on revival /thought • Quickly lead to new scientific / technological changes • Questioned everything • Explore the World

  4. Causes of English settlement in America • Religious Persecution • Henry VIII broke from the Catholic church and created the Anglican Church – “Protestant” • Began persecuting none Anglicans • Caused none Anglicans to flee to America • where they could worship as they wished

  5. Causes of English settlement in America • Economic Changes • The land owning Nobles kicked the farmers off their lands to raise SHEEP for WOOL = $$$ • Left thousands of farmers homeless • Caused Farmers to flee to America • Where they could farm freely

From the Renaissance • Enlightenment • Theory that natural law applied to social, political, and economic relationships and that people could figure out these natural laws if they use reason. • Great Awakening • Theory that stressed individual devotion / union with god. • Helped revitalized the colonists faith • Both had a huge impact on colonial society

Move to Independence • Proclamation of 1763 – ended the French and Indian War • Created war dept in England • Stamp Act – taxation of the use of stamps on the colonists • Quartering Act – required colonists to house British troops • Declaratory Act – taxed the colonists for everything • Townshend Act – Required colonists to carry British receipt on purchases Boston Massacre – “No taxation without representation” • Tea Act – Only allowed colonists to buy one brand of tea • East Indian Tea Boston Tea Party – colonists destroyed 342 chests of tea • Intolerable Act – Restricted colonists civil rights

  24. Northwest Land Ordinance • Was a system of surveying and selling lands in the western lands • Achievements: • Laid the basis for organizing new territorial governments • Set up a method of admitting new states into the Union • Outlawed slavery
