  2. Excluded from Reform • Discrimination- unequal treatment because of race, religion, ethnic background, or place of birth. • Springfield, Illinois- first race riot • Anti-semitism- discrimination or hatred of Jews

  3. Anti-Asian Policies • There were separate schools for Asian immigrants in Calif. • Gentlemen’s Agreement- restricted Japanese immigration to the US

  4. Discrimination against African Americans • Many African Americans still lived in the rural South and worked as sharecroppers or had low paying jobs. • Plessy v. Ferguson- Supreme Court case that legalizes separate but equal • Ku Klux Klan- goals to restore Protestant, white America. Didn’t like: Catholics, Jews, immigrants, or African Americans

  5. Racial Violence • Lynchings= hangings; happened to African Americans in the South and Chinese in the West.

  6. Fight for Equality • Booker T. Washington- founded Tuskegee; • taught African Americans farming and industrial skills • If African Americans had economic power, they could demand social equality and civil rights • National Negro Business League- started by Booker T. Washington to promote business development among African Americans. • Up From Slavery- Washington’s autobiography; work patiently towards equality, get an education and skills to become valued members of society.

  7. Ida B. Wells- • leader of the National Association of Colored Women • Started a crusade against lynchings • George Washington Carver- discovery of hundreds of uses of plant products including peanuts at Tuskegee

  8. Society of American Indians- formed by Native Americans to improve their living conditions and educate whites on cultural differences • Dr. Carlos Montezuma- exposed govt. abuse of Native American Rights. • Hispanic Americans: • Mutualistias- self-defense associations; Mexican Americans relied on themselves to help one another • Barrios- Mexican neighborhoods.
