  4. Go Local approval process • Area submits proposal to Associate Director of RML • RML forwards proposal to NLM after considering • Does proposal meet guidelines? • Other proposals from overlapping area? • NLM accepts or requests clarifications

Proposal considerations Does area have • An institutional commitment to create and continue the site? • At least a half-time salaried person to coordinate the project? • Staff to do outreach and publicity? • Staff to index and maintain the local records with the vocabulary and geographic mapping? • Staff to handle customer questions? • An existing Web site or database to serve as a starting point?

  6. $how Me the Money • One-time funding of up to $25,000 per project are available from NN/LM for • NN/LM Full Members • NN/LM Affiliate Members must • Partner with a Full Member, or • Have a health sciences librarian working on the project. • Funding requests must follow, or be accompanied by, a full Go Local proposal

  7. Use funds for…. • Programming and computer support for mapping of an already existing system to MedlinePlus (Missouri model). • Selection and entering of materials into NLM or locally hosted database, including personnel costs, excluding half-time staff requirements, to perform these activities such as consultants, administrative support staff, selectors, etc. • Outreach and promotion including personnel and travel costs to perform these activities. • Supplies and communications costs.

  8. What doesn’t the money fund? • Half-time salaried coordinator • Creating a local database (though they can be used to help link an existing local database)

  9. One portal, two models • NLM-hosted • Recommended for areas that have no pre-existing databases for local services • Locally hosted • Used by areas that already have well-developed Web sites and programming support

You go to MedlinePlus to find information about the disease. • You want to find services that will be available to help with your mother’s care. • On right side of Alzheimer’s Disease health topic page is link to Go Local. You choose Indiana.
