  1. Active Measurement Project for KREONET& APAN Manhee Lee KISTI/Supercomputing Center http://amp.kreonet2.net/

  2. KREONET High-Tech S&T applications based KREONET/KREONet2/HPCNet High-Tech S&T devices (Supercomputers, CAVE,DB Servers…)

  3. Introduction to KREONET • Korea Research Environment Open Network • one of the Korea’s national core networks since 1988 • Providing an advanced S&T and R&D infrastructure to 300 R&D institutes and universities • KREONet2, next generation research network, NGI(Next Generation Internet) technologies through interconnection with STAR TAP • Help researchers process large capacity of data in supercomputers and provide activation of world-class collaborative application service • As KISTI is in charge of National Grid project, KREONET is focusing on providing Grid networking service

  4. Why AMP for KREONET? • End-to-End measurement for ALL AMP sites!! • Operators • One stop: just monitoring whole network by visiting AMP homepage • Simple: just clicking without ping, traceroute • Already: just printing without making graphs and tables • Users • Public: Everyone is able to access • Available: Same data to both operators and users • Easy and economic: just one FreeBSD system for joining useful world-wide measurement infrastructure

  5. AMPlets AMP Architecture AMPlet1 HTTP Request System cron process Web Service AMP Server trigger am_master fping traceroute apache TCP connection File write File read am_slave ping traceroute cgi-bin ping results traceroute results am_slave am_slave File read File write TCP connection ping results traceroute results ping results traceroute results AMPlet2 ping traceroute ping results traceroute results TCP connection AMPlet3

  6. Deployment Map of AMP KREONET KIST Inha NCA KISTI(4) KAIST CNU POSTECH Chonnam KJIST Kumho TIT

  7. AMP KREONET • Official AMP KREONET & KOREA & APAN homepage • As of 2003.1, 14 monitors installed and running • By region • Seoul(2), Incheon(1), Daejeon(6), Kwangju(3), Pohang(1), Pusan(1) • By organization • Institute(7): NCA, KISTI(4), KIST, Kumho • University(7): CNU, Inha, KAIST, KJIST, POSTECH, Chonnam, TIT(Tongmyung Info. Tech. Univ.) • By network • KREONET, KOREN, KREN, etc.

  8. What can AMP do? • How is the RTT average between • PoP1 and PoP2? • What is trace from PoP3 to PoP4? • Were there any problems last weekend? • Is the current trace different • from yesterday’s? • : One Stop, Simple, Already AMP operator

  9. From Seoul PoP(Hongneung) to Daejeon PoP(amp-one) Average RTT

  10. Traces • Traces from NCA to POSTECH

  11. Trace Change?? • Trace changes from Postech to Hongneung?

  12. What can AMP do? • Do I have contiguous connection to • my ISP? • What is trace between user A and me? • and how is the link performance? • : Public, Available AMP Users

  13. Long term status • Connection between amp-korea and amp-sdsc • Last 5 weeks, KOREN/KREONet2 – STAR Tap link is very stable

  14. Traces • From KAIST SALab and KJIST Netmedia Lab • From KJIST Netmedia Lab and KAIST SALab

  15. Nobody knows it, but AMP APAN can do. Some, and AMP APAN can be one of them. No idea, but AMP APAN can do Not at all, but 50% of AMP APAN completed already. Proposal to make AMP APAN • Who knows RTT and traces among APAN members? • How many collaborative researches are there in APAN? • Do we have APAN performance measurement infrastructure? • Is it difficult to make AMP APAN? At least one AMPlet for each APAN country That’s AMP APAN!!

  16. How to Join AMP APAN? • Buy a PC • Desktop-level PC • Most AMP KREONET amplets: Pentium III 1.2GHz, 256MB, 100Mbps, 40GB. • Install OS and AMPlet V1.0 • OS: FreeBSD 4.3-Release or later • AMPlet V1.0 • Sofware download and manual, visit http://amp.kreonet2.net/ • Mail amp-admin@kreonet2.net

  17. 5 Minutes Workshop for AMPlet Installation First. FreeBSD 4.3 or later • Partition • Distribution (bin, compat22, compat3x, crypto, info, man, src(kernel), ports, Xfree86(man, lib, bin)-no server or fonts or setup utility) • Packages(emacs, fping, sudo) • linux compatibility • others: as default. • Install Perl Utilities • HTTP-Lite-2.1.1 (KISTI down) • File-Compare-1.1001 (KISTI down)

  18. 5 Minutes Workshop for AMPlet Installation Second, OS config for AMPlet • Configure OpenSSH with an ACL • Turn off all deamons + enable tcp extensions • adduser actmon • visudo and add this line “actmon ALL=ALL” • put this line “/sbin/sysctl –w kern.ipc.maxsockbuf=3000000” in /etc/rc.conf • change root mail address in /etc/aliases. “root: root@amp.kreonet2.net” • cron_enable=”YES” in /etc/rc.conf or /etc/defaults/rc.conf • ln –s /usr/bin/perl /usr/local/bin/perl5

  19. 5 Minutes Workshop for AMPlet Installation Third and Last, AMPlet set up as actmon • AMPlet untar (KISTI down) • check AMPlet lists in http://amp.kreonet2.net cd /home/actmon/src/pinger, ./reconfigure-amp.pl • add crontab for periodic measuring • Ask your network administrator to configure firewall • necessary: ICMP(IP 1), Traceroute(UDP 33434) from any hosts • Optional: Telnet(TCP 23), FTP(TCP 20.21) from some hosts • Mail amp-admin@kreonet2.net
