  6. Geography Where is Afghanistan? Is Africa a country or continent? What is a hemisphere? Does geographical location impact culture?

  7. Intercultural Competence • “Intercultural Competence is the ability of individuals to interact with others who are from different cultural backgrounds.” -Chen & Starosta, 1996

  8. Intercultural Competencies • Cultural Understanding • Cross-cultural sensitivity • Effective communication • Language acquisition/Proficiency • Internal understanding of cultural differences • Interaction with individuals from varying cultural backgrounds

  9. Information Literacy • The Internet • What is a credible source? • If it is on the “web” it must be true.

  10. To ensure the survival and well-being of our communities, it is imperative that community colleges develop a globally and multiculturally competent citizenry. (American Council on International Intercultural Education)

  11. Well Prepared Students • Foreign language programs that start at the elementary level should continue through high school. Build it slowly but effectively. • Increase emphasis on geography

  12. Infuse the curriculum with global components. • An English paper can be about another country. • A fourth grade writing assignment can be about life in Samoa. • Integrate global information into the established curriculum.

  13. Increase practice on how to access credible information from the internet. Increase dialogue on what makes a source credible. Increase interaction with international students via technology.

  14. Simple solutions are all that is required to prepare K-12 Students for the “Flat World”
