  1. THURSDAY 4TH OF OCTOBER YEAR 6 SET 1 MATHS

  2. L.O: ORDERING FRACTIONS

  3. Ordering fractions which have different denominators can be difficult…… Would you rather have….. 413 5 4 10 of a pizza?

  4. Its hard to decide which is the biggest, so this is what we do to make it easier…. 413 5 4 10 Each of these fractions has a different denominator. We need to change the denominator so that they all have the Same one.

  5. This is how we change the denominator……. 4 1 3 5 4 10 We find a larger number that all three denominators with multiply into. For example, the numbers 5, 4 and 10 all can multiply to make 20- so we make the common denominator 20.

  6. This is how we change the denominator……. 413 5 4 10 X 5 X 2 X 4 We multiply 10 by 2 to get a denominator of 20 We multiply 4 by 5 to get a denominator Of 20 We multiply 5 by 4 to get a denominator of 20

  7. What ever we multiply the denominator by, we must do the same with the numerator 413 5 4 10 X 5 X 2 X 4 1656 20 20 20 Now its easy to place these in order! 5616 20 20 20

  8. What ever we multiply the denominator by, we must do the same with the numerator So this one is the biggest 413 5 4 10 X 5 X 2 X 4 1656 20 20 20 Now its easy to place these in order! 5616 20 20 20

  9. RECAP….. • To order fractions we first must change the denominator • Find a larger number that all the denominators will multiply into (e.g. 18) • Decide what you need to multiply each fraction into to get the same denominator (e.g. by 4 or 5) • Make sure you multiply the numerator by the same amount • Now its easy to order the fractions
