  1. Chapter 2: Data AnalysisScientific Notation and Dimensional Analysis

  2. Scientific Notation • Scientific notation is a way representing extraordinarily large and small number in an easier and more manageable fashion. • The mass of a proton is 0.00000000000000000000000000167262 kg, or 1.67 x 10-27 kg.

  3. Parts of a number in scientific notation • A number in scientific notation consists of two parts: A number more than 1, but less than 10 10 raised to a power (exponent)

  4. Positive and negative exponents • When a number is much larger than one, the exponent will be a positive number. 4.2 x 105 420000 • When a number is much smaller than one, the exponent will be a negative number. 4.2 x 10-5 0.000042

  5. Adding and subtracting using scientific notation • MAKE SURE THE EXPONENTS ON YOUR TWO NUMBERS ARE THE SAME BEFORE YOU ADD OR SUBTRACT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 7.34 x 105 + 3.1 x 104

  6. 7.34 x 105 + 3.1 x 104

  7. Multiplying and dividing using exponents • In multiplication, you multiply your two factors and add your exponents. 2.3 x 103 x 5 x 104

  8. Multiplying and dividing using exponents • In division, you divide your first factors, then subtract the divisor from the dividend.

  9. Dimensional Analysis • Dimensional analysis is a method of problem-solving that focuses on the units used to describe matter. • (This is that whole thing where we turn grams to kilograms and liters to milliliters)
