  3. HOMEWORK • Due tomorrow in class. • Chose TEN Proverbs and explain each in complete sentences. • What is the Proverb saying (lesson)? • When do you think this Proverb would have been given? • How can this Proverb be applied to today’s world? • How are you personally effected by this Proverb?

  4. After David Died… • Solomon took the throne • God appeared to Solomon in a dream • God: “Ask what I shall give you.” • Solomon: “Wisdom and knowledge.”

  5. Solomon’s Wisdom • Two women came to him, each claiming that a baby was theirs • Solomon told them to cut the baby in half • Real Mother broke down and cried • Problem solved! • 1st Kings 3:16-28

  6. Imperial Israel • Solomon’s kingdom –international empire • Wealth and Wisdom • Married Pharaoh's daughter • Unique –daughters not sent to foreign lands • Pharaoh wanted to be part of new empire

  14. Proverbs • Describes positive actions • Shows us how to live • The over-all lesson is that wisdom comes from God/ Holy Spirit • Wisdom comes from above

Proverbs • Five purposes of Proverbs (versus 2-6 of Chapter 1) • To know wisdom and instruction • To perceive words of understanding • To receive instruction (correction) of wisdom, justice, judgment and equity, so that we know what is right • To give suability to the simple, and knowledge and discretion to the young person • To deeply understand the words of the wise

  21. Solomon’s Pride and Apostasy • Glory did not come without a price • Taxes • Labor –Israelites • Glory – was making Israel miserable • Solomon had become the king, King Samuel had predicted about • Punishment –Divided kingdom

  22. Solomon’s Prideand Apostasy • Solomon’s wives • Had persuaded him to build temples to their gods • Drew people to worship foreign gods • Apostate –turned away from the true religion
