  1. The Respiratory System Day 3 Ms. Salamat http://prezi.com/jfdg26durfxh/respiratory-system/#share_embed

  2. Respiratory Disorders/Conditions • Disorders and conditions of the respiratory system are associated with either the lungs or air passages. • There are a number of diseases that interfere with the primary function of the respiratory system effecting either • 1) the uptake and delivery of oxygen to the body cells • 2) the removal of Carbon Dioxide • Some diseases restrict the flow of air in an out of lungs, • Others have an inability to deliver sufficient are to the alveoli = _______ surface area which affects gas exchange

  3. Some Causes of Disease • Primary cause of lung disease = • Other Causes = air pollution, airborn irritants, and asbestos. • Whatever condition, all results the same • Insufficient oxygen is available to the tissues of the body last minute

  4. Asthma • Chronic respiratory disease characterized by inflammation and swelling of the bronchi and bronchioles that obstructs airflow. • Symptoms: coughing, wheezing, tightness of chest, closeness of breathe. • Cause: not fully known, but something triggers an inflammation of the lungs which cause it to secrete a lot of sticky mucus in airways which contribute to the reduced airflow. • Treatment: bronchodilators (inhalers) or drugs that help dilate the bronchioles making It easier to breathe.

  5. Pneumonia • Disease of the lungs causing the alveoli to inflame (swell) and fill with liquids. • Interferes with normal ability to take in oxygen causing the body’s cells to starve for oxygen. • Pus an mucus accumulate in alveoli • 2 types: • Lobar Pneumonia – affects a love of a lung • Bronchial Pneumonia – affects patches throughout both lungs • Symptoms: fever, cough, shortness of breath • Causes: infections by bacteria, viruses, mycoplasmas, fungi • Treatment: antibiotics, but still 5% fatality rate

  6. Tuberculosis (TB) • Bacterial infection caused by Myobacterium tuberculosis. Spread when people sneeze or cough • Symptoms: coughing, chest pain, weight loss, coughing up blood • Cause: not fully known, but something triggers an inflammation of the lungs which cause it to secrete a lot of sticky mucus in airways which contribute to the reduced airflow. • Treatment: bronchodilators (inhalers) or drugs that help dilate the bronchioles making It easier to breathe.

  7. Effects of Smoking • Known to cause lung cancer, emphysema, asthma. • 3 substances in smoking that causes problems for the respiratory system • Nicotine – natural insecticide. It kills pests and is addictive • Carbon monoxide – affect ability to let respiratory system to deliver oxygen to other bodies. Hemoglobin has a much higher tendency to bind to carbon monoxide than oxygen. • Tar – black, sticky substance that accumulates preventing exchanges of gas. Tar also causes the cilia lining to stop working.
