Terms • Excretion: Metabolic reactions e.g. excreting urine sweat etc. • Osmoregulation: The process of regulating water potential in order to keep fluid and electrolyte balance within a cell or organism relatives to the surrounding. • Homeostasis: The tendency of a system to maintain internal stability. • Kidneys: Paired organs with several functions. They filter waste from the blood and excrete them in urine.

  3. Three excretory products produced by humans are: • Waste products of respiration. • Waste products from red blood cells. • Waste products of protein metabolism.

How the kidney functions • The kidneys are the filtering devices of blood. • They control the amount of Amonia, salt and water in the blood • They remove waste and water from blood to form urine. • They conserve water, salt and electrolytes. • The kidneys play an important role in keeping the blood pressure under control by secreting a specific hormone

Risks because of kidney failure • Kidney failure is when the kidneys lose the ability to carry out normal function. • Kidney failure is extremely dangerous because toxins will quickly build up in the body. • Kidney failure does not usually lead to permanent kidney damage • Kidney failure can be treated with the right medications.

The risks of kidney disease • The two main risks of kidney disease are diabetes and high blood pressure. • Type 1 and 2 diabetes can cause a condition known as diabetic neuropathy. • This affects the network of tiny blood vessels that run through the Glomerulus. • Glomerulus: The main part of the kidney responsible for filtering the toxins from the blood.

  8. Kidney disease: a condition in which the kidneys become impaired over a long period of time. • It causes permanent damage to the kidneys • High blood pressure left untreated can result in kidney disease. • Excessive use of pain killers can cause kidney disease. High cholesterol and lupus can put a person at a higher risk of developing kidney disease.
