  11. Scientists look for patterns. • Scientists can predict the weather by looking at weather patterns. Each day they: • Look at what the clouds look like each day. • Look at the direction of the wind. • Measure the wind speed each day. • Measure the rainfall or snowfall. • Measure how hot or cold it is outside. When they see a pattern in these measurements, the can predict the weather.

  12. We are starting out the year learning about weather changes and patterns we see in the seasons. To do this we are going to collect weather information to help us understand the changes in the weather and patterns we see in each of the seasons. At the end of the year you be able to say: • I can describe the weather. • I can measure the weather. • I can write about the weather. • I can know about each of the seasons.

  13. Let’s Do Some Weather Observations In a little while we are going to go outside to look at the weather. But first, let’s look at some pictures of what kinds of weather we might see outside.

  16. What kind of weather does this picture show? Why do you think the wind blows?

  17. What kind of weather does this picture show? Why is foggy weather sometimes dangerous?

  18. What kind of weather does this picture show? How does a rainy day change our plans?

  19. What kind of weather does this picture show? How is snow different than rain?

  20. Which season does it rain the most in? Why is rain so important? What are the problems of too much rain?

  21. Which season so we have the most sunshine? Why is sunshine so important? What are the problems if we get too much sunshine?

  22. Which season does it snow the most in? Why is snow so important? What are the problems of too much snow?

  23. Which season does the leaves turn color? Why do you think the leaves change color?

  24. Let’s Go Outside • When we go outside, here are a few things we want to look at: • What kind of a day is it outside. • Are there any clouds? • What do the clouds look like? • Do you think it is going to rain later? • What is the temperature like? • Is this weather you would like to play in? • Which season is it outside? • Have the leaves on the trees changed color yet? • How did we dress for the weather today?
