SWBAT ask and answer leveled questions about the internment of Japanese-American during WWII and cite evidence to support answers by participating in a socratic seminar. 02/09/2017 Warm-up: Please read the socratic seminar rubric & answer the following questions. • What is one question you have about the socratic seminar? Socratic Seminar Overview • Today, you will be participating in a socratic seminar about internment of Japanese-Americans • Your grade will be a summative assessment  40% of your grade • I will be grading you on your ability to ask questions, answer questions, and cite evidence from class texts. • It’s way for you to practice academic discourse and for Mrs. Owens to hear how well you understood class texts.

  4. Group Work: Socratic Seminar Prep • Get into groups of 3. • Decide who will be: • Time-Keeper • Discussion Leader • Presenter • Create 6 questions. Use sentence stems. • Answer all 6 questions. • Find evidence for all answers C = 2 H= Ask group, then ask me A = Socratic Seminar Prep M = Get into groups P = Each group member has a role and is helping to fill out his or her own socratic seminar prep handout 40 minutes

Socratic Seminar Expectations. • No one can dominate the conversation • Everyone has to speak at least once (minimum) • Refer to class texts by referencing their title. • We will have 3 rounds of discussion –10-12 minutes each • If you are on the outside circle, you are grading a partner, writing down notes/questions you want to bring up in your own circle • If anyone on the outside causes any disruptions, they lose points.

  6. Partner Check In • Get with your assigned partners. • Rehearse one question you might ask and how you might answer it. • Give each other feedback on what sounded great and what could be improved. • Make sure you have all of your articles, questions, and papers to help you succeed in the discussion.

  7. Socratic Seminar: WWII Internment • 12 students in round 1 • You may not be in the circle at the same time as your assigned partner • 12 minutes to discuss. • Be brave! Ask the first question! And offer an answer too! C = 0 unless talking in circle H= Please wait until after discussion is finished A = Socratic Seminar M = Quickly form a center and outer circle P = Actively listening to or participating in the socratic seminar 12 minutes per round

  8. Popcorn Reading: The Giver C = 0 H= Raise hand & wait quietly A = Class reading of The Giver M = None; P = Following along with the text; answering any discussion questions. 10 minutes

  9. Exit Procedures: • HOMEWORK: • Continue with reading log. Read 60 minutes/week. • You may use assigned reading from The Giver toward your time. • Warm-up/Exit Slip =Bell-Writes section of your binder.
