  1. Evangelism ‘Missional Life’ Acts 1:8 Allen Lo – Aug 20, 2017

  2. Key Bible Verse But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. (Acts 1:8 )

  3. Background • Jesus was crucified on the cross • Jesus died and was resurrected • He appeared to his disciples • He was with his apostles for 40 days talking about the kingdom of God • He asked them to wait in Jerusalem for God’s promise – Baptism of the Holy Spirit • Apostles asked if it is time to restore again the kingdom to Israel

  4. PAW of Evangelism (Acts 1:8) Foundation of a “Missional life” • Prerequisite • Receive power after the Holy Ghost is come upon you • Action • Be my witnesses • Where • Jerusalem • Judaea & Samaria • Uttermost part of the earth

  5. Prerequisite – Holy Spirit • What Pre-requisite? • ‘Wait for the promise of the Father’ • Act 1:4-5 • What: Critical success factor - Holy Spirit • Born of the Spirit (Indwell in all Christian) • Fill with the Spirit (Power and Authority) • Why: Work of the Holy Spirit • Speaker – Word, Speech, courage, etc • Listen – Understanding, faith, etc • How: Obedient to the guidance of the Spirit • e.g. Paul in his missionary journeys

  6. Prerequisite – Holy Spirit • You will receive Power (δύναμις-dunamis) • Power that comes from the Holy Spirit • Power that opens the eye of the blind… • Power to have courage and preach the word • Power to understand the word of God • Power to see our sin and repent • Power to experience God • Without the Holy Spirit, we are powerless • Zechariah 4:6b “Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts.”

  7. Action – Be my Witnesses • Witness (μάρτυς-martus)-Martyr, record • “To witness for me” vs “Be my witnesses” • “Doing” vs. “Being” • Live out Christ in our life and naturally we can share Christ to other • People pay attention to not just what we do but who we are • Watch and Pray- examine our behavior: • When we are alone • When we face challenges • When we are successful

  8. Be my witnesses… “Witness is not just a little activity we do now and again, Witness is who we are.” – Darrell Guder (Professor of Princeton Theological Seminary)

  9. Where – J-J-S-U • Jerusalem, Judaea, Samaria, and the uttermost part of the earth • Not necessary a matter of sequence, priority, or importance • It basically mean EVERYWHERE • Anytime, Anywhere, Anyone • In season, out of the season • Don’t just stay inside the church to share the gospel, GO outside. Take the church to the community and the world

  10. But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. (Acts 1:8 )

  11. Be my witnesses in… • What is my Jerusalem? • What is my Judaea? • What is my Samaria? • What is my uttermost part of the earth?

  12. Summary • Prerequisite • We have the Power from the Holy Spirit • Action • We need to live a life so that we can Be His witnesses • Where • We need to go and ‘save lives’ • With PAW, we can live a ‘Missional Life’

  13. ‘Missional Life’ • New term popular in late twenty century • ‘Missional’ is a concept influenced by Tim Keller and Alan Hirsch before the twenty century • It describes the life of a missionary including his/her footsteps, thinking, action, and impact to other through the gospel • Sent by God just like Christ “as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you.” (John 20:21) • Mark Driscoll - The missional life of all “sent by Christ” is a copy of Chirst’s “become flesh.”

  14. ‘Missional Life’ – Example: Joseph • Joseph’s story (Gen 45:5-8) • Many ups and downs before rising to power • שָׁלַח(shâlach) – Sent (3X) vs. Sold • Missional life – “to preserve life.” • Joseph’s ‘missional life’ • As a servant at Potiphar’s home • As a prisoner at the jail • As the ‘prime minister’ in Egypt • Joseph’s experiences in each situation • God was with him • Found grace in the eye of the master • The master assigned him to oversee everything • The master was blessed due to him • Joseph expressed the principles of his belief

  15. ‘Missional Life’ - Summary • Mark Driscoll – Missional life • Be like Christ • Live in the community as a missionary • Faithful to God and His word • Just like Christ did in his time • A missional life is to bear Christ’s cross, enter into different culture and community, and share the gospel. (All Christians) • Not only bringing people to the church but also bringing to church to the world. “Go” • “Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.” (I Corinthians 10:31)
