  2. Route • A route is a path from one place to another. • Examples of routes are: rivers, roads, railroads, and hiking trails.

  3. Crossroads • Crossroads are a place where two routes cross. • A trader may have built a store at a crossroads to sell supplies to travelers. A restaurant and a hotel may have been built at a crossroads to serve the travelers.

  4. Bridge • A bridge is a road built over a waterway.

  5. Ferry • A ferry is a boat that carries people and goods across a waterway.

  6. Ford • A ford is a shallow place in a waterway that can be crossed by walking, riding, or driving.

  7. London Bridge • London is a city in England that began as a crossing point at a river. • London Bridge crossed the Thames River. • When London Bridge was rebuilt, people in the U.S. built the old bridge and moved it to Lake Havasu City, Arizona.

  8. London Bridge • Farmers traded grains, wool, butter, and pigs for cloth or leather goods carried there by ships. • Doctors lived by London Bridge so they could help the farmers if they were sick. • Today more than 9 million people live in London.
