  1. Early Colonists US History I 2013-2014

  2. Sailing in the Unknown • Middle Ages: Known as the medieval period in European history ranging from AD 500-1500. • Roman Empire collapsed and there is chaos. • Feudal System as local nobles try to maintain order.

  3. The Crusades (1095-1291) • Roman Catholic Church • Holy places located in Palestine (Also known as the Holy Land), but it’s ruled by Muslim Turks. • In 1095, Pope Urban II asked Christian kings and knights for help.

  4. Unification • Most nobles lose power and land due to the Crusades. • Middle class becomes bigger • Kings begin to have more power again • England: Barons force King John to sign the Magna Carta, which established some principles of gov’t.

  5. Renaissance • Took place in the 1300s • French word for “rebirth.” • Started in Italy, but expanded northward to the rest of Europe. • New ways of: • Art • Thinking • Studying history • Science

  6. Christopher Columbus • Requested sponsorship from Queen Isabela of Spain and set sail to “Asia” in Aug1492. • Landed in Caribbean in Oct. 1492. Thought he was in the Indies. • Went to Cuba then La Isla Espanola (Haiti and DR) where they found gold. • Ship sinks so Columbus goes back to Spain with remaining 2 ships.
