Compound-complex • Compound • Compound/complex • Complex Sample Paragraph (Yours might be slightly different): One day, Ms. Stitt and Ms. Rubsam rode their bikes to the library at Notre Dame. They were happy to ride their bikes since it was such a nice spring day. They often had to swerve around other students and ride in the grass, though, because they didn’t want to hit the other students.Ms. Stitt wanted to get back on the sidewalk when they had passed the students, but unfortunately, Ms. Stitt didn’t see the huge curb. Her bag, chain on her bike, and Ms. Stitt herself went flying, and the guys playing ultimate Frisbee had to help her. Ms. Stitt tried to leave, but her chain was broken and the ultimate frisbee guys had to come back again to help her, leaving Ms. Stitt embarrassed.

Discuss various ways this could happen • Are some people just evil to do this to others? How do people take advantage of others so much?

Vocab 3 • fatuous (adj) • Ms. Stitt knows that playing Candy Crush is a fatuous activity, as she gains nothing by it, though she cannot stop playing because it’s addicting. • misanthrope (N) • When the new kid avoided everyone at all costs, I couldn’t tell if he was simply shy or if he was a misanthrope and hated us all. • allay (v) • When there was a spider on my apartment wall, I was so glad that my fiance was there to allay my fears and got rid of it for me.

  8. 4. ephemeral (adj) • Katie was so sick of how ephemeral all of her relationships were; she just wanted the right guy who would stick around, not one that would leave her after two months. • egregious (adj) • I couldn’t believe Notre Dame’s egregious mistakes on the football field this past weekend with three interceptions and some bad penalties; no wonder we lost the game! 6. neophyte (N) • Though I wish I was a good golfer, unfortunately I am a neophyte who needs some practice because I have only played for a couple of summers. 7. complicit (adj) • Ms. Stitt watched two movies this weekend that were both about three idiotic men who engaged in complicit activities, with the first about three bodybuilders who killed for money, and the second about three men plotting to kill their bosses.

  9. 8. equity (N) • The boss tried to treat all of his employees with equity, but some still felt that he played favorites. 9. plenary (adj) • We do not want to give our president plenary power and have America’s government become a dictatorship, so we instituted the three branches of government with the legislative and judicial branches as well as the executive one. 10. caustic (adj) • I did not appreciate the opposing team’s parents’ caustic comments when we were losing 28-0 at the game, and I almost beat up one dad when he sarcastically said, “WOW! You guys are awesome, your kid looks like he’ll be the next Adrian Peterson. ALL DAY!”
