PEOPLE Ahilya Bai Holker The Courageous Queen of Malwa  BY MOHIT-KUMAR-SHARMA  MAR 16, 2023 14:47  Ahilya Bai Holker, also known as Ahilya Bai Holkar, was a legendary queen and ruler of the Malwa kingdom in central India during the 18th century. She is revered as a symbol of courage, wisdom, and compassion and is considered one of the greatest rulers in Indian history. Ahilya Bai Holker was born in 1725 in the village of Chaundi, located in the present- day Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra. Her father, Mankoji Shinde, was a village headman, and her mother, Sushila Devi, was a deeply religious woman who had a profound influence on her daughter's life. Ahilya Bai Holker received her education at home, where she learned to read and write in Marathi and Hindi. She also received training in household management, agriculture, and animal husbandry, skills that would later prove valuable in her role as queen. Ahilya Bai Holker married Khanderao Holkar, the heir to the Holkar dynasty of Indore, in 1733. Unfortunately, Khanderao died in battle only a few years later, leaving Ahilya Bai Holker a young widow with an infant son. At this time, the Holkar dynasty was in a state of turmoil, with various factions vying for power. Despite the difficult circumstances, Ahilya Bai Holker refused to be defeated. She took charge of the kingdom and worked tirelessly to restore order and stability. She was
