  2. Causes • Bacteria and viruses can cause pneumonia • Most victims get it after cold or flu • Other illnesses such as cancer or diabetes can cause pneumoia.

  3. Symptoms • Cough: Patients will likely cough up mucus (sputum) from your lungs. Mucus may be rusty or green or tinged with blood. • Fever: • Fast breathing and shortness of breath • Shaking and “teeth chattering” chills • Chest pain that especially painful when they cough or breathe in • Fast heartbeat • Tired and weakness • Nausea and vomitting

  4. Prevention • Don’t smoke • Wash your hands often • Avoid people with the flu or a cold • Pneumococcal vaccine

  5. Treatment • Antibiotics • If antibiotics don’t work doctors will run tests to see what organism are causing it. • Get plenty of rest • Avoid dehydration by drinking fluids

  6. Cure • All antibiotics are used have a high cure rate for pneumonia.
