Enhancements in Quality Assurance and Method Refinement for Environmental Sampling in 2006

This report outlines the key quality assurance activities and developments in environmental sampling for 2006. It addresses quality control measures comparing XAD sampler vs. whole water splits, discusses challenges with dissolved vs. total selenium measurements, and highlights advances with EBMUD's HRGCMS. Key findings include overcoming non-detect issues with BDE 209 and modifying extraction methods for improved recovery of PAHs and pesticides. It also outlines future plans for 2007, including QAPP revisions, DQI comparisons, and continued method validation.

  1. Highlights 2006: Quality Assurance • Field QC: continued XAD sampler vs whole water splits • Working with old labs for previous analytes • Se dissolved vs total problem (BRL) • EBMUDNew HRGCMS, & larger samples size (heterogeneity) • Overcame ND problem, still some variability w/ BDE 209 • Axys water extractions (2005 samples) • Switched to ambient extraction method • Better on PAHs, still some BDEs in blanks • Introduced some recovery issues with OP pesticides • Switch of surrogates for 2006 samples

  2. Plans 2007: Quality Assurance • QAPP revision • Met with SWAMP to compare DQI objectives • Drafts to be sent out Q1 ’07 for review/comment • Continued calibration/validation of sampling and analysis methods • Split of some archive tissue samples to new lab (MDL/recovery issues) • Split of water samples with UCSC/commercial lab • Further method development/refinement • (New hire?) to work with labs on BDE 209 issues
