Objectives • Essential Standard/Objective- • 9.ATOD.1.3 Contrast prescription medicines, nonprescription medicines and illegal substances in terms of their use and abuse. • Benchmark- • 9.ATOD.1.3 Contrast 3 different types of medicines (2perscription/2OTC) and 2 illegal substance and their effects on the body.

  4. In Your Daybooks • Do you think these PSAs get the message out to teens about the negative effects of alcohol & drugs? • Why or Why not? • What are your personal beliefs about underage drinking? Marijuana? • Who/what influences your beliefs the most? (parents, friends, teachers, coaches, siblings?)

  5. Key Terms • Abuse- is the improper usage or treatment for a bad purpose, often to unfairly or improperly gain benefit. • Addiction- physical and/or psychological dependence on psychoactive substances (for example alcohol, tobacco, heroin, caffeine and other drugs)

  6. Key Terms Continued • Dependent- a need for a substance so strong that it becomes necessary to have this substance to function properly • Drug- any substance that, when absorbed into the body of a living organism, alters normal bodily function. • Sobriety- the condition of not having any measurable levels, or effects from, alcohol or other drugs that alter ones mood or behaviors.

  7. Higher or Lower • Do you think the following statistics are higher or lower? • I am going to read a risky behavior statement with a statistic in it. • I want you to decide if the correct number for that risky behavior is higher or lower. • Thumbs up  HIGHER • Thumbs down  LOWER

  8. 50% of North Carolina high school students had at least one drink of alcohol on at least one day in the past 30 days.

  9. 15% of North Carolina high school students said they had 5 or more drinks of alcohol in a row within a couple of hours on at least one day in the past 30 days.

  10. 15% of high school students had used marijuana one or more times in the past 30 days.

  11. 12% of Americans ages 12-17 have used prescription drugs for non-medical reasons.

  12. 10 million Americans 12 or older currently use illegal drugs.

  15. Become the EXPERT • Your group is going to become the expert on the drug I assigned you. • Your job will be to teachthe class about your assigned drug. • In your group, you will work to answer these questions about your drug.

  16. Answer These Questions 1) What type of drug is it? (classification and give examples) 2) What are the slang names for this drug? 3) How is this drug taken? 4) Is this drug legal or illegal? 5) Does this drug cause addiction? 6) What are the short-term effects of this drug? 7) What are the long-term effects of this drug? 8) Are there other interesting facts or information about this drug that you think your classmates need to know?

Ticket Out The Door • Why is it important to think about the positive and negative consequences when making a decision? • Was it easier to examine the consequences after learning the facts about these drugs today? Why? • Do you think knowing the facts about these drugs will make it easier to make a healthy decision when faced with the pressure to use drugs?
