  2. Introduction

  3. Facts- “I Am a Rock” • Reached #3 in the US during the spring of 1966 • Written by Paul Simon • On the “The Best of Simon and Garfunkel” CD and “the Sound of Silence” Album

  4. What does it mean? • During the 60s and 70s most soldiers who were in the military were in their early 20s. • These young soldiers thought themselves to be “invincible,” which is why they were prime targets for being drafted. • This songs represents the typical strong-willed American G.I. and shows the ideologies in the minds of a young soldier during this time: “I am a Rock… and a rock feels no pain.”

  5. Poetic Value • Personification- “I have my books and my poetry to protect me.” Poetry is inanimate and isn’t thought to protect people. • Assonance “I touch no one and no one touches me.I am a rock” • Alliteration- Freshly Fallen, Silent Shroud of Snow, Deep and Dark December
