  2. 1) Bloody Conflict • Technology caused both sides to lose millions of men during WWI • The combination of old-fashioned strategies and new technologies resulted in terrible destruction.

  3. 2) Trench Warfare • Artillery Guns • Were placed several miles behind front lines • More men were killed by artillery than any other weapon • Trenches • To protect themselves, troops began digging trenches • Networks of elaborate trenches were made that stretched for miles • Machine Gun • Troops relied upon them heavily • Prevented enemy from overrunning trenches

  4. No-Man’s-Land • Space between opposing trenches • Rough barren landscape • Both sides built barbed wire entanglements and obstacles in front of their trenches

  5. 3) New Technology • Poison Gas • Fumes caused vomiting, blindness, and suffocation • Gas Masks • Used to counter gas attacks • Armored Tank • Could crush barbed wire and cross trenches • Slow and unreliable • Aircraft (Dog Fighters) • Equipped with machine guns • Small bombs to drop on enemy lines • Easily caught fire and pilots did not use parachuttes

  6. German U-Boats • Submarines used to take out ships • Convoys (ships traveling in groups) reduced shipping losses
