  1. interactions with other organisms Amelia Ireland and Jane Lomax

  2. The Ontology

  3. Lack of Counterpart Terms

  4. The ‘Non-host’ Problem

  5. The ‘Non-host’ Problem II

  6. Solutions • Remove ‘non-host’ designation • Add generic processes with the wording ‘other organism’ • Add existing ‘host’ and new ‘symbiont’ terms as children • Append terms with ‘during symbiotic interaction’ to clarify

  7. Solutions • E.g. acquisition of nutrients from host • acquisition of nutrients from other organism during symbiotic interaction • acquisition of nutrients from host • acquisition of nutrients from symbiont

  8. Solutions: before

  9. Problems with Viruses

  10. Solutions: viruses • Generalize virus terms to apply to any organism • Processes with specific viral variants can be renamed • Reassess terms and annotations to see if they refer to host or virus processes; add new terms as required • Rehome terms under ‘interaction with other organisms’

  11. Solutions • cell communication / signalling • cell adhesion / fusion (e.g. membrane fusion) • cell death • response to biotic stimuli from other organisms • behaviours involving other organisms, e.g. mating • entry into / engulfing / incorporating another organism • movement within another organism • exit from another organism • phagocytosis • nodulation • pollination

  12. Questions • Is ‘response to other organism’ equivalent to ‘interaction with other organism’? • Is ‘multi-organism biological process’ equivalent to ‘interaction with other organism’?
