White Blood Cells/Leukocytes • Arise from stem cells in the bone marrow. • Function in the defense mechanism. • Target/engulf damaged & dead cells foreign to the body. • Many-massed together in lymph nodes & the spleen, which divides to produce cells that act against specific viruses, bacteria etc. • Differ in types, size, shapes, stains and specific immunological functions.

  3. Types of Leukocytes • Neutrophils-fast-acting phagocytes. • Basophils-inflammatory responses to invasions & tissue damage. • Lymphocytes-produces T and B cells; specific immune response. • Macrophages and dendritic cells – phagocytes that call provoke immune response to specific threats. • Natural killer cells – kill body cells that have turned cancerous or have been infected with viruses.
