Children & Youth Workers Reminders: • All RCYW should take the refresher course every 3-5 years • Find the RCYW Application at http://cofchrist-gpnw.org/officers.html • Applicants cannot provide references they are related to • Interviewer cannot be related to the applicant or references • Must become registered within 1 year of training • Must have application approved within 6 months of application date

Mandatory Reporting See “Mandatory Reporting Flow Chart” handout Mandatory Reporting: • As a Registered Children & Youth Worker, you must immediately report when the following happens: • An allegation of abuse is shared or witnessed • A child or youth shares the intention to harm themselves • Anyone shares the intention to harm a child or youth • Also report abuse of elderly and vulnerable adults

Where It Begins: The Priesthood Call • Recommendation for Ordination (for Aaronic priesthood & Elders) • Use GPNW form on website (see handout) • Submit electronically to MC President with copy to Leadership Support Minister • Upon affirmation, candidate’s name sent to First Presidency for clearance to proceed • Letter from MC President sent to Pastor/Pastor Team detailing process, including required Temple School course(s)

  17. Where It Begins: The Priesthood Call • Call is shared with candidate confidentially, he/she has 1 year to accept • Pastor team provides guidance to candidate throughout process • 1-2 mentors should also be identified to work with candidate before AND after ordination

  22. Risk Management The risk management program helps identify and evaluate ways the church is potentially affected by risk. This includes implementing techniques to better protect the church, methods to avoid or transfer risk, and our insurance program.

  23. Child Protection & Misconduct Allegations The ministry of child protection ensures the safety of children in our care, justice for abusers, and the building of communities of blessing. World Church ministers who become aware of sexual misconduct have a responsibility to initiate a report.

Policies and Guidelines • An understanding of policies and guidelines for camps, high risks activities, and special situations is important. • Camping Guidelines • Advanced planning and preparation are necessary to meet all required camping guidelines. • High Risk Activities • Leadership assumes the responsibility to understand and implement these guidelines with wisdom and effectiveness. • Playground Equipment • When installing or constructing playground equipment on church property, professional services must be used.

Policies and Guidelines • Insurance Coverage • Know insurance requirements before signing contracts or beginning plans for any new project or event. • Dangerous Conditions • When dangerous conditions occur, Risk Management provides policies and guidelines for their correction. • Insurance Claims • Follow the steps for filing a variety of claims including auto, injury, building or property, and workers compensation.

Rationale • Previous Congregational Support Minister (CSM) model is no longer viable, due in part to: • Reduction of paid ministerial staff (5 2) • Increased responsibilities of all mission center ministerial staff • This results in the need to reduce the number of congregations each paid staff member serves, while continuing to provide support for mission and congregational health alongside our self-sustaining ministry colleagues  • More reliance is needed on self-sustaining ministers in order to support congregational leaders • Congregational leadership (whether leadership team or sole pastor) should have a dedicated, trained minister to support that leadership

Organization for Congregations • Congregations are assigned a Leadership Support Minister (LSM) to support the congregational leadership. This includes communications, visioning, priesthoods calls, contracts, etc. • The Leadership Support Minister (LSM) is the point of communications to and from the mission center and the congregational leadership. The LSM is the link to the congregational leadership (not the entire congregation).  • The Leadership Support Minister (LSM) can refer questions that they are unsure of to the Mission Center President or Mission Center Financial Officer. 

  34. Organization for the Mission Center • Each Leadership Support Minister is connected directly to a Team Lead for communication and reporting. The Team Lead is a paid ministerial staff member (i.e., a member of the Mission Center Leadership Team).  • The Leadership Support Ministers meet at least once quarterly with the Mission Center Leadership Team for updates and training.  • This model supports Members and Friends not affiliated with a congregation (“Mission Center Non-Resident” designation).
