  3. UNICEF plays a major role in international aid Budget of over $2.8 Billion Active in 190 countries

  4. UNICEF was founded in 1946 to combat post-war strife

  5. 1950: Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF begins as a grassroots movement in New York

  6. 1965: UNICEF is awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for “promotion of brother-hood between nations”

  7. 1990: the Convention on the Rights of the Child goes into effect

  8. UNICEF has five main areas of focus: • Child Survival and Development • Basic Education and Gender Equality • HIV/AIDS and Children • Child Protection • Policy Advocacy and Partnerships

  16. HIV/AIDS has a huge effect on children There are: 20 million AIDS orphans worldwide 2 million children under the age of 15 living with AIDS 1.4 million pregnant women with AIDS in low-income countries

  17. UNICEF’s “Four P’s” program has led to great strides in stopping the spread of childhood HIV

  25. Many object to UNICEF’s funding of abortions and their disapproval of international adoptions
