  5. HORNER’S SCHOOL VISION Horner Junior High’s vision is to provide an outstanding and well rounded education to all of its students. This will be done by ensuring equitable outcomes, a safe campus, highly qualified professional teachers and staff, and opportunities for social growth.

  6. HORNER’S MISSION • It is our mission to provide a safe, purposeful, and caring environment conducive to learning where all students: • Gain knowledge for personal power and confidence • Develop effective study habits and skills • Develop successful social skills • Learn how to manage personal property • Develop self discipline and learn how to make proper decisions • Learn to organize and plan time for study and other activities • Gain experience dealing successfully with different teachers and effectively learning in various classroom environments. • Learn to appreciate and value the differences in others, to respect others’ rights, and to treat everyone with dignity.

  7. Attendance • Please remember to have your parent or guardian call the school in the morning if you will be absent that day. • If no one calls the school, you must bring a note explaining your absence to the office before you go to class.

  8. SAFETY RULES • No Running! • Avoid Horseplay! • Do NOT Throw Anything!

  9. Students must always accept responsibility for their actions! There are consequences to your actions! Lunch Cleanup Lunch Detention Saturday Detention In-House Suspension Suspension Opportunity School DISCIPLINE

  10. For example: • A fight will earn you a 3-5 day suspension. • Skipping a class = Saturday school • Skip teacher detention = 2 Lunch detentions • Skip lunch detention = Sat. School • Skip Saturday School = In house suspension • 2nd Saturday School Skip = Suspension

  11. Dangerous items/ toy weapons Fighting Skipping class, school, lunch pick up or detention Bad mouthing people, jokes, rumors, harassing… Using the internet or phone to hurt people Threatening anyone – verbally or physically, directly or indirectly Not keeping your hands to yourself Taking anything that doesn’t belong to you Arriving to class late Messing or playing around! TOP 10 LISTBut certainly not the only reasons for “getting in trouble”

  12. By the way… • It’s never OK to sell anything at school for personal profit. That would be like iPods, phones, candy, or whatever else you “find”. • Also, if you can’t figure out a way to lock up your skateboard or scooter, don’t ride it to school. Staff can not be responsible for storing items like this. • One more thing…no wheelie shoes

  13. RESPONSIBILITY CENTER • Issued to students who are uncooperative and off task in class. • RC = Automatic Lunch Detention • 6 RCs = Saturday School • 2 RCs in one day = Saturday School • Students sent to RC must be quiet and must do assigned work or be sent to the Vice Principal for disciplinary action (like Saturday School)

  14. Lunch Detention • Begins immediately at 11:40 • Late arrivals will be turned away and will be assigned a Saturday School. • Don’t expect a reminder; it’s your responsibility to remember. If you get one be thankful! • If you are absent on the day of your detention, the detention will automatically be moved to the next school day. You must attend the detention when you return to school.

  15. At Horner Junior High School there is a Hands-Off Policy! Respect Yourself. Respect Others. Respect Your School. Holding Hands is Permitted. SELF-CONDUCT

  16. Some Excuses that Don’t work here • “We were just playing” • “No one told me” or “I didn’t know” • “I forgot” • “It was an accident” • “I don’t know” (AKA: temporary amnesia) • “I’m new here”

  17. CLOSED CAMPUS • Once you arrive to school each day, you must stay. • Students should go directly to the courtyard and wait for school to begin. Students should not be in the Main hall until the bell rings. • By 2:30 unless students are in a school sponsored activity they need to be off the campus.

  18. MOBILE PHONE POLICY • Phones and pagers are now allowed on campus. (Bring @ Own Risk!) • Phones are to remain in the OFF, not in silent, position during the instructional day and out of sight. (As well as all school events.) • Not to be used until after-school. • Phones heard or seen will be confiscated by school staff.

  19. How do I get my phone and other stuff back? • Phones are returned to parents after a contract is signed by parent, student and administrator. • See Ms. Renoir about all other confiscated items. Items may be picked up after school. Don’t ask a teacher if you can go to the office for something important…it won’t be worth your effort!

  20. LUNCHTIME • Stay out of the main hallway and the 20-wing during lunch. • Balls may only be bounced on the black-top! • No food or drink on the blacktop. • Students need to stay single-file in lunch lines without cutting. • Buying food for others is not permitted. • Do NOT feed the birds! • Do NOT run in courtyard!

  21. DRESS CODE • Baggy and sagging pants must not be worn. • Spaghetti straps, halter tops, and shirts that expose the stomach are prohibited. • “Gang” related or other “inappropriate” attire must not be worn. • Shirts with inappropriate words or pictures must not be worn. • Headgear must not be worn! (hats, nets, bandannas, and headbands.)

  22. DANCE/ SOCIAL POLICY • Students must present their school issued ID, as well as a parent signed dance ticket to enter school dances. • Dances are from 5:30-7:30 p.m. • No dance admission after 6:00 p.m. • Cell phones may not be used during the dance. (cell phone policy) • Dance Elimination: Saturday Detentions/Suspensions • Must attend school the day of dance

  23. After school sporting events • Students must present their school issued ID • You must attend school the day of the game. • If students exit they are not permitted back • Only water allowed in gym. • Cell phones off and out of sight • Good sportsmanship is expected of both players and spectators.

  24. READ YOUR STUDENT HANDBOOK! You are held accountable for everything in that book… KNOW IT!
