Leonardo da Vinci • 1452 – 1519 • He was a scientist, an inventor, an architect, a musician, a sculptor, a mathematician and also an artist. • He was a gentle vegetarian who loved animals and hated war, yet he worked as a military engineer to invent advanced and deadly weapons.
Michelangelo • 1475-1564 • His name has become synonymous with the word "masterpiece”. • He was an Italian Renaissance sculptor, painter, architect, and poet. • His greatest glory, painting the Sistine Chapel, began in 1508, and was completed in 1512.
Rembrandt • 1606-1669 • Many of his paintings feature a strong contrast between light and dark, a loose brush stroke, and a convincing portrayal of the subject’s expression. • Rembrandt also painted many biblical scenes.
Claude Monet • 1840-1926 • Monet was born on November 14th in Paris. • He was one of the founders of the Impressionism movement. • Monet stayed loyal to nature and enjoyed painting pictures of landscapes.
Vincent Van Gogh • 1853 – 1890 • He had many jobs, such as working in an art gallery, as a teacher, in a bookstore and as a preacher. • In 1885 Vincent went to Belgium and he discovered Japanese art which had bright colors - this influenced his style.
Pablo Picasso • 1881 – 1973 • He is famous for being the co-founder of Cubism. • Throughout his life Picasso also did ceramic and bronze sculptures, drawings, etchings and poetry.
Georgia O’Keeffe • 1887-1986 • Georgia O’Keeffe was born in 1887 in Wisconsin • She painted close-ups of flowers in bright, bold colors. Before Georgia O’Keeffe no one had ever painted pictures of flowers so close up.
Salvador Dali • 1909 – 1989 • Salvador Dali was born in 1909 in a place called Catalonia, Spain. • He was one of the greatest of the Surrealist group of Artists. • Salvador was also a sculptor, filmmaker, writer, jewelry designer, book illustrator and worked in theatre.
Andy Warhol • 1928 – 1987 • Andy Warhol was born on August 6, 1928 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. • He is most famous for being involved in the pop art movement and he was called the Prince of Pop.
Keith Haring • 1958-1990 • Keith was born on May 4, 1958. He grew up in Kutztown, Pennsylvania. • He moved to New York City and would sit on the subways to draw. • Keith wanted everyone to make art, especially children.
