5. Sentence Types A simple sentence is made up of a subject and a predicate and expresses only one complete thought. The horse galloped across the field. My grandfather walks three miles a day.

6. Sentence Types A compound sentence is made of two closely related independent clauses. The two clauses can be joined by a comma (,) and a coordinating conjunction (and, but, or or), or by a semicolon (;). Many early airplanes were simple gliders, but the Flyer had a gasoline-powered engine. Gorillas reinforce bonds by grooming each other; it allows close interaction between the two animals.
