  2. Passive Voice • This short story was written by Edgar Allan Poe. • The decorations have been hung up. • My computer is being repaired. • Students should be required to take an exam. • Camping shouldn’t be allowed in public parks.

  3. Passive Voice • "to be" (is, are, am , was, were, has been, have been, had been, will be, will have been, being) followed by a past participle. • The past participle is a form of the verb that typically, but not always, ends in "-ed." Some exceptions to the "-ed" rule are words like "paid" (not "payed") and "driven." (not "drived"). • "to be" + past participle = passive voice • For example: • Why was the road crossed by the chicken? = passive voice • Why did the chicken cross the road?

  6. Passive Voice • They make Fords in Cologne. Simple Present • Fords are made in Cologne. • Susan is cooking dinner. Present Continuous • Dinner is being cooked by Susan • James Joyce wrote "Dubliners". Simple Past • "Dubliners" was written by James Joyces. • They were painting the house when I arrived. Past Continuous • The house was being painted when I arrived. • Steven has written over 20 papers . Present Perfect • 20 papers was written by Steven.
