  1. Day 1

  2. Words Unlocked: Day 1 • Agenda: • Do Now: A Final Exam for my Father • Literature circle instructions • Guided practice: Literature circles • Independent practice: Poem analysis

  3. Do Now Watch the this video (3:40- 6:30)of Words Unlocked Judge Joachin Zihuatanejo performing his poem A Final Exam for my Father and answer the questions below. 1. What are your thoughts about this poem? 2. What do you think is important when writing a poem?

  4. Today’s Objectives • SW • participate in small group literature circles to analyze different poems in order to answer the question, “What is poetry?” • synthesize information from readings in literature circles and create posters to present findings from their texts and analysis to the class.

  5. Thoughts to start the day… Who are some of your favorite poets? Why? Do all poems rhyme? Why do authors choose to write poems?

  6. Classroom Norms & Expectations…as we begin a new unit • Class norms to live by: • Respect yourself, each other, teachers and staff, and the environment. • One mic • Always try first before asking for help • Work consistently and diligently • Daily procedures: • 1. When you enter the classroom, please pick up your binder and the daily handouts. • 2. When you have a question, please raise your hand! • 3. When it's time to pack up and leave, please return your binder to the bookshelf and clean up your table area. • 4. Always put your handouts in the right section of your binder, please.

  7. What is poetry? How will we find out? • What will we do? • Each table will be assigned two different poems. • In your table groups each person will be assigned to a role (reader, discussion leader, summarizer, presenter). • As a group you will complete one analysis sheet and one group poster. • You will present your group poster to the class today. • Why are we doing this? • Before we begin reading and analyzing poems we need to understand what a poem is. • This poetry hunt will help us break down some of the stereotypes we may have learned.

  8. 1. Choose your role in your group for the literature circle. Pick up your assigned handout. If your group does not have 4 people, someone may have to take on two roles or you can split up the remaining roles. Directions Roles Reader: Your job is to read the text aloud. You must read slowly and clearly and be sure that everyone is following along as you read. Discussion Leader: Your job is to lead discussion once the reading is completed. You will guide the group in responding to the questions that are asked and you will write down the responses to the questions on the group handout. Summarizer: Your job is to help your group summarize all that has just been read and learned and pick out 5 “must knows” from the text. You will write your group’s summary on the group handout. Additionally, you will lead your group in creating 2-3 “lingering questions” that you have after the reading. Presenter: Your job is to lead your group in creating a group poster, which all group members must help to create, and then you will present your group poster to the class.

  9. Right Now! • In your groups select your role. • If there are not enough people to fill all of the roles, some people might have to take on an additional role!!

  10. In your groups • The reader will read the text (you can take turns if you want!) • The discussion leader will then lead the group in answering ?the discussion questions and he will write the group responses ?on the sheet. • The summarizer will lead the group in summarizing the ?information by listing "5 take-aways" (the most important points ?from your packet) and 2-3 "lingering questions" (questions your ?group still has on your topic). • The presenter will lead the group in creating the group poster: ?it should include the topic, the most important information, and ?be very clear. (It does not have to be pretty!) • When steps 1-4 are complete we will present our literature circle findings to each other!

  11. Create Group Presentation Posters! • We will complete the literature circles by presenting your area of expertise to the class. • *The presenter will lead your group in creating a presentation poster. • What should be on the poster? • Your topic/subject • 5 "take-aways" from your summary • Any important information about your topic you think the whole class needs to know • ...remember, it doesn't have to be pretty!

  12. Wrap it up! Make sure your literature circle group sheet is complete and turn it into the teacher!!
