  3. CCSS Basics • The CCSS mandates the student learning outcomes for every grade level/grade band. • Students will be tested and instructional effectiveness will be measured based on CCSS (beginning 2015). • Federal funding is tied to CCSS adoption, implementation, and accountability. • ELA and Mathematics CCSS are just the beginning. Science and Social Studies are in the draft stage…more subject area standards are being developed. • CCSS create an opportunity for educators to talk and share knowledge across state lines. 4. Common Core English Language Arts Brought to you by…. Slides courtesy of Statewide SIS and CESA #7

  5. Literature Informational Text Foundational Skills ONLY Grades K-5 The range, quality and complexity of the standards evolve across the curriculum. Slides courtesy of Statewide SIS and CESA #7

  6. A Note About Unique Structures… • Only Grades K-5 have Foundational Skill Standards • concepts of print, the alphabetic principle, and other basic conventions of the English writing system • not an end in and of themselves but necessary and important components of an effective, comprehensive reading program • instruction should be differentiated: good readers will need much less practice with these concepts than struggling readers Slides courtesy of Statewide SIS and CESA #7

  7. More About Unique Structures… • English Language Arts for grades K-8 are listed by grade (K, 1, 2 etc.) and 9-12 are in grade bands (9-10, 11-12) • ELA standards include teachers of History, Social Studies, Science & Technical Subjects Slides courtesy of Statewide SIS and CESA #7

  8. Anchor Standards for Reading Literature, Informational Text, and Foundational Skills • Key Ideas and Details • Craft and Structure • Integration of Knowledge and Ideas • Range of Reading and Level of Text Complexity Major Organizing Structure Throughout the Reading Standards Categories Broken down in Each Category to Grade Level or Band Specific Standards Slides courtesy of Statewide SIS and CESA #7

  9. Anchor Standards for Reading Anchor Standards Key Ideas and Details 1. Read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from it; cite specific textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions drawn from the text. 2. Determine central ideas or themes of a text and analyze their development; summarize the key supporting details and ideas. 3. Analyze how and why individuals, events, and ideas develop and interact over the course of a text. Category Slides courtesy of Statewide SIS and CESA #7

  10. Anchor Standards for Reading Each Category Key Ideas and Details 1. 17. Common Core Mathematics Brought to you by…. Slides courtesy of Statewide SIS and CESA #7

  18. Key Points • Foundation in whole numbers, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions and decimals • Procedural as well as conceptual • Hands-on • Apply mathematical ways of thinking to real world issues and challenges • Rigorous definition of college and career readiness • Emphasize mathematical modeling Slides courtesy of Statewide SIS and CESA #7

  19. Structure of the Standards Slides courtesy of Statewide SIS and CESA #7 Standards for Mathematical Practice • Carry across all grade levels • Describe habits of mind of amathematically expert student • Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them • Reason abstractly and quantitatively • Construct viable arguments & critique the reasoning of others • Model with mathematics • Use appropriate tools strategically • Attend to precision • Look for and make use of structure • Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning

  20. K-12 Standards for Mathematical Content • K-8 standards presented by grade level • Organized into domains that progress over several grades • Grades K-8 introductions give 2 to 4 domains at each grade level • High school standards presented by conceptual theme (Number & Quantity, Algebra, Functions, Modeling, Geometry, Statistics & Probability) Slides courtesy of Statewide SIS and CESA #7

  21. Grade Level Intent Grade 1 Narrative Slides courtesy of Statewide SIS and CESA #7

  22. Standards for Mathematical Practice are provided in detail. The Practices are also listed at the beginning of each grade level Slides courtesy of Statewide SIS and CESA #7

  23. Structure of the Standards • Domainsare larger groups that progress across grades • Grade Level Standards define what students should understand and be able to do • Clusters are groups of related standards Domain Operations and Algebraic Thinking 1.0A Grade Level Standards Cluster Slides courtesy of Statewide SIS and CESA #7

  26. What are your next (first) steps? • Get to know your WMELS… • Spend some time learning the Kindergarten CCSS standards… • Utilize collaborative structures – (such as PLC’s - Professional Learning Communities)… • Work with your Kindergarten teachers to set up a systematic way to fosterunderstanding and coherence… • Know what your students need to know and be able to do to be prepared for the next level… Slides courtesy of Statewide SIS and CESA #7
