  1. Approved Interventions March 30, 2011 GPS High School Mathematics

Mathematics • High school mathematics curriculum is posing a major problem with students being unable to pass Mathematics I and/or II. • Many juniors around the state have failed to pass these courses. 17% of juniors have one or no mathematics credit. • Concerns over students being able to pass the new GHSGT.

  3. Mathematics March 14, 2011 • The SBOE today approved the recommendation by Superintendent Dr. John D. Barge to allow four discrete mathematics courses for students who may be struggling with the integrated mathematics curriculum. • The four new courses -- GPS Algebra, GPS Geometry, GPS Advanced Algebra, and GPS Pre-Calculus – reflect a more traditional organization of content standards.

  4. Rationale • “Our systems need the flexibility to teach in the manner that best meets the needs of their students, and local system leaders are best positioned to make those decisions. However, I want to be clear that this is not a retreat from the rigor of our Georgia Performance Standards (GPS). This is simply a restructuring of the GPS in a discrete fashion.” (Superintendent John Barge)

  5. Mathematics March 14, 2011 • The State Board’s actions also allow Mathematics I-III Support classes to count as core credit or elective credit, giving students more opportunities to earn the necessary credits for the high school diploma.

  6. Mathematics March 14, 2011 •  Students must still earn four units of mathematics in order to qualify for a diploma. •  How those four units are comprised is subject to the approved rules with some local flexibility based on student needs and post secondary aspirations.

Approved Tier 2 InterventionsFirst GPS Mathematics Cohort ClassesStudents who entered high school in 2008, 2009, and 2010 • Divide the current GPS mathematics standards into discrete courses and allow incoming freshmen and ANY current 9th – 11th grader who is struggling to earn credit in the integrated approach the opportunity to switch over and take the SAME RIGOROUS standards delivered in discrete courses. • State BOE approved the use of Mathematics I, II, and III Support as core credits for current 9th, 10th, and 11th graders.

  8. NOTE: The shift from GPS to CCGPS mathematics due to the infusion of CCSS will not affect 2012 graduates.

ApprovedTier 2 InterventionsFirst GPS Mathematics Cohort ClassesStudents who entered high school in 2008, 2009 and 2010 • Mathematics III/GHSGT Preparation can be offered for core credit for students who entered high school in 2008, 2009, and 2010. • Students who entered high school in Fall 2008, Fall 2009, or Fall 2010 and successfully complete Mathematics I, Mathematics II, Mathematics III/GHSGT Preparation, and Mathematics III will have satisfied the mathematics requirements for graduation. Approved Tier 2 InterventionsFirst GPS Mathematics Cohort ClassesStudents who entered high school in 2008, 2009, and 2010 • Students who entered high school in Fall 2008, Fall 2009, or Fall 2010, who have four mathematics credits including Mathematics I and Mathematics II will have satisfied the minimum mathematics requirements for graduation. • Mathematics I Support and Mathematics II Support may be treated as elective or core courses. Possible Long-term Solution(s) • The adoption of Common Core presents several opportunities. • The Common Core mathematics standards are designed to be delivered in either discrete or integrated courses. • We must decide whether to teach the Common Core as: • A) Integrated Courses (Math I, II, III, and IV) • B) Discrete Courses (Algebra, Geometry, Advanced Algebra) • C) Let systems have the option to choose one or both
