  2. What is the difference between a good medical assistant and a great one? • Communication Skills? Attitude? Compassion?

  3. Bottom Line: • Personable • Ability to communicate on Patients level • Empathy • Being prepared

  4. How to go from good to great!

  5. Preparation is key • Do not appear rushed • Know what the patient is being seen for • Have the room set up • Have a treatment plan lined up from your doctor

  6. Be inviting • Smile • Be warm and friendly • Call them by name • Ask how they are

  7. Bring yourself to their level. • Eye contact is huge • Don’t be afraid to touch your patient

  8. Get a detailed history • Nature of the problem • Location of the problem • Duration of the problem

  9. Get a detailed history cont. • Onset of the problem • Characteristics of the problem • What Aggravates the problem • What Treatment have you had

  10. Try not to interrupt your patient • Refocus them if they get off topic • Answer all of the patients questions that you can without diagnosing. • If you do not know the answer, tell them then find out the right one

  11. Always ask “Do you have any other questions before I get the doctor?” • Patients need to know if you are actually listening to them. Reiterate what they are asking you. • Never make the patient feel like they are wasting your time.

  12. Clinical Pathways • Protocols create consistency between doctors • Protocols are a recipe for success. • 80% of the time the recipe works. 20% of the time you may have to create your own.

  13. Protocols allow for a more efficient and effective patient visit. • Protocols create better outcomes • Patients need to believe they will get better, and that you believe in them and the treatment will get them better.

  14. Always end a visit with: • Do you have any other questions • Thank you for coming in today • Have a wonderful day • Smile

  15. Always be a scout!!!

  16. Follow new visits with: • A letter/phone call/email that reinforces their diagnosis and treatment plan • Ask them if they have any questions • Make them feel special • Let them know you care, and they will be a patient for life
