  1. Flywheel vs Flexplate Flywheels are used in virtually all engines today, while flexplates are still found in a few applications. Flexplates are mounted to the crankshaft and use a belt or chain drive to rotate the flywheel that is attached to the engine's camshaft (for an overhead cam) or the pushrods for the overhead valves of a four- or six-cylinder engine. In some applications, such as the Chevrolet small-block V8 283, the camshaft is connected to one end of the shaft and the pushrods to the other end so that both shafts rotate together. This allows the entire engine to run smoother as load changes without having to make further adjustments.The main purpose of a flywheel is to store rotational energy produced by the pistons when the engine is running. The inertia of the flywheel allows the engine to maintain a steady speed even when it slows down or accelerates. As the flywheel rotates, it produces a series of pulses that can be detected using a tachometer to measure the engine's RPMs.Engines with automatic transmissions use a vacuum-operated clutch to engage and disengage the gearbox.

These powerful motors produce huge horsepower and are quite popular for use in racing applications. All the big block Chevys have identical displacements of 427 cubic inches, but the bore sizes vary slightly depending on the application. A larger stroke length gives a big block Chevy lower internal friction than a small block and produces more horsepower, but a larger bore results in increased weight and higher oil consumption due to the greater amount of moving parts in the combustion chamber. As a result, big block Chevy engines are generally used in race applications where maximum performance is required.
