  2. David Siqueiros • David Alfaro Siqueiros (1896-1974) together with Diego Rivera and Jose Clemente Orozco are considered to be the three masters of the Mexican school of mural painting. Siqueiros, born in Chihuahua, México, was a sergeant in the Mexican Revolution and a colonel in the Spanish Civil War. He was very active in the organizing of México's labor forces, and his political activism resulted in many deportations and years in jail. It was in jail where he created most of his easel works. He incorporated many new materials and techniques, and was the first artist to use acrylics as a painting media.

  3. Next third slide With the possible exception of André Malraux, no individual associated with the arts has been involved in direct political action more than David Alfaro Siqueiros. Student agitator, soldier, leader of an assassination squad -- Siqueiros was all of those things. Yet he is also considered one the artistic masters of the twentieth century, a member of that great Mexican school of mural painting that includes José Clemente Orozco and Diego Rivera. Creative and innovative, always interested in new techniques and materials, Siqueiros frequently used pyroxylin, a substance related to gun-cotton, which dries with amazing speed.

  4. Facts Siqueiros painted his first mural in 1923 at the National Preparatory School in Mexico City. In his early murals his modern/traditional style was already evident. Though he used traditional fresco painting techniques the finished product reflected his recent visit to Europe. Studies in Spain weren't the last to leave a impression on h1.
