PROJECTS Science and Policy Integration for COastal System Assessment (SPICOSA) 2007 - 2010 Funding: European Commission 6th Framework Program • Objectives • Create a self-evolving, operational framework for delivering prognostic assessments of policy options for the sustainable management of coastal zones considering their ecological, social and economic aspects • Developing the methodology called Systems Approach Framework (SAF) Outcomes • Test and improve the SAF at eighteen Study Site Applications (SSAs) all over Europe, including İzmit Bay

PROJECTS Sustainable Concepts Towards A Zero Outflow Municipality, ZER0-M 2003 - 2008 Partners:8 Country, 11 partners Funding:European Commission MEDA Program • Objectives • Achieving sustainable water management for small municipalities • Using technologies to achieve optimized close-loop usage of all water flows • Render widespread usage of these applications • Outcomes • Obtaining low water consumption • Separation of grey, black and yellow water • Reuse of treated water for non-drinking purposes • Technology development of these systems and optimization and adaptation according to living conditions and climate • Constructing a Training and Demonstration Center (TDC) in MRC

PROJECTS Control and Management of the Harmful Aquatic Organisms and Pathogens Transferred by Ballast Water 2006 - 2008 Funding:Undersecretariat of Maritime Affairs • Objectives • Determine current situation and risk in the Turkish ports related to ballast water transfer • Develop Ballast Water Management System for Turkey according to Ballast Water Convention • Determine the national liabilities, responsibilities and activities in order to implement the Ballast Water Convention (2004) after it’s ratification by Turkey • Determining the necessary administrative/technical infrastructure • Preparation of the Ballast Water legislation

PROJECTS Constitution of Emergency Response Centers & National and Regional Contingency Plans 2007 - 2010 Funding: Undersecretariat of Maritime Affairs Ministry of Environment and Forestry • Objectives • Establishing Emergency Response Centers (ERC) response against marine pollution due to oil and other harmful pollutants • Determining the necessary number of vehicles, equipment, material, and personnel of ERC • Determining the most suitable methods for quick and effective response and educational methods • Determining the vulnerability of the coasts and marine environment to oil and other harmful pollutants • Determining the preventive actions in case of emergency • Preparation of a database including the effects of harmful pollutants to increase the response effectiveness

Exploitation of Agricultural Residues in Turkey (AGRO-WASTE) Objective: Environmentally, economically, and socially sound exploitation of agricultural waste residues in Turkey Targets: - Transfer of EU experience regarding policy and technology - Improved agricultural waste management practices and policy in Turkey, for reduced environmental impact - Use of waste residues for energy production Scope: Mapping of exploitable waste residues and energy potential; analysis of administrative, legislative, and institutional barriers; technology review; pilot studies Partners: 4 Partners (3 EU countries, Turkey) Project Type: EC LIFE Project (2004-2006)

PROJECTS Pollution status of the Istanbul Water Reservoirs 2004 - 2009 Funding:Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (Water and Sewerage Administration) • Objectives • Determination of water quality, ecological structure and pollution status of the lakes • Investigation of the effects of the stream/river discharges to the aquatic environment • Obtaining recent data/information for the future lake management plans • Outcomes • Ecological structure, water quality and sediment pollution status of the lakes were determined. • Effects of the discharges to the lake ecosystem were investigated • Recent data were obtained for the sustainable management of the lakes.
