  1. Education for Sustainable Development and Green Economy innovation The youth agenda BY: MOSES OTIENO JAOKOO

Problem Statement • Poor land use planning • Lack of a National Urban Development policy • House hold food insecurity and Poor nutritional value for poor families and slum dwellers • Declining agricultural land area whereas there is high population growth • Declining forest cover thus increased impact of climate change at house hold level • Poor Participation of youths in decision making involving Environmental conservation and management

Challenges to these problems • Variance between the National Land Policy 2009 and the Constitution of Kenya 2010 on Land and Environment • Devolution of Government structures creating County government without a policy framework on urban Development • Poor food storage facilities to cater for bumper harvest and low pricing of commodity crops thus making farming unattractive to youths. • Urban expansion to rural areas thus delineating rural agricultural land to real estate development: The case of Coffee plantations in Kiambu in central Kenya region. • Lack of political will to combat forest intrusion by human activities due to political considerations

  4. Objectives • Develop strategies to educate students and youths on sustainable development and Green Economy innovations • Build partnerships with grass root community based organizations, local authorities, corporate bodies and the Earth Charter • Establish Green Parks in target schools to nurture tree nurseries, tree planting and practical education sessions on organic agriculture • Champion Adopt-A-Tree Project within schools and youth groups in order to reach a target of 10 million trees planted by 2015 • Create Environment Champions Steward Awards to youths who champion Earth Charter principles in practice and have provided exemplary work on Adopt-A-Tree project and other environmental innovations • Mentor focal environment youth leaders in various environmental segments to work as teams in building and creating grass root awareness on the Earth Charter. • Develop a simple customized tool kit on sustainable development and the Green Economy to the various segments of our target group. • Develop a Scholarship program to support schools and students who have adopted the earth charter and certification program • Organize regular community service activities on tree planting, waste collection and innovative waste recycling methods

  5. GOALS • Plant 10 Million trees by 2015 within schools and community access areas • Recruit 10,000 volunteers by 2015 to champion sustainable development and the Green Economy using the Earth Charter Principles • Raise 10 Million Shillings by 2015 to support our country wide mobilization, awareness , education and community development programs • Mobilize 10 Million Kenyan youths to sign the Earth Charter by 2015. We will target celebrities and VIPs also. • Develop Mass Education Campaign slogans for media and pro bono advertisement targeting various youth segments: The Earth; our common habitat, Green is my roots, Green Education for a better world etc.

  6. Plan of Action • Use our current contacts on character education i.e. 120 schools across the country as our launching ground • Organize a training of trainers in December targeting our key facilitators and sharing the Earth charter and other training tool kits. • Develop a stakeholder data bank and organize a stakeholders forum early next year probably in February • Develop a national implementation plan of action for the project together with stakeholders based on need assessment. • Create a monitoring and evaluation team to support the field facilitators with impact assessment and on course project improvement strategies • Develop a website and other social media sites to collect online petition and for social networking with other interested groups by January. This is also a strategy for project visibility.

  7. LOG FRAME • December 2011, TOT for 18 coordinators at YMCA hostels, Nairobi. Outcome: common plan of action for year 2012 • Development of a website by January 2012: outcome, create visibility to target groups and donors • January: Planning for the Stakeholders strategy meeting • February: First Stakeholders meeting: outcome, joint implementation strategies and partnership development • March to April: Activity planning and time table scheduling for various activities within our program: outcome, calendar of activities development based on resources assessment • May-June: Field visit to selected schools as pilot centers • June: official launch of the program with stakeholders, partners and target group support • July onwards program implementation according to the joint implementation plans and calendar of activities adopted.

Narrative Budget • TOT workshop 2 days full board at YMCA, central hostels per person per day $ 45 by 18= $ 1620 • Transport reimbursement to youth coordinators per person $50 total =900 • Website development $500 • Operations and planning for stakeholders meeting $250 (materials development, communication, transport, hospitality). • Stakeholders meeting est. cost for 12 persons $ 500 • Field training visits and schools and youth based organizations capacity building on sustainable development est. cost between February to June $ 500 • Educational Material Development and Production $ 1,500 • Laptops at least 5, 5 LCD Projectors, 5 digital cameras (if we can get even used ones as a donation from our partners we will appreciate) • Official launching program: to be determined based on progress and resources assessment by march 2012 • Total preliminary budget: $ 5,320
