  3. Spatial Analyst extension What is an extension? Steps: • Load extension • Load extension’s toolbar

  4. Spatial Analyst extension • Spatial Analyst toolbox • Extraction tools: Extract by Mask (used to clip grids) • Zonal tools: Tabulate Area, Summarize by Zone (used for numeric summaries of grids) • Spatial Analyst menu • Distance function • Surface functions: Contour, Hillshade, Slope, Aspect, Viewshed Hillshade Slope Aspect Viewshed

  5. Grid layers: Layer properties • Right-click layer, view properties • Source tab tells you: • Cell size • Grid status (temporary or permanent) • File name • Statistics: Min, mean, max

  6. Grid attribute tables • Most grid based layers have attribute tables • Attribute tables include: • Value: Numeric value • Count: Number of cells with value • Finding area: (Number of cells) x (Area of a cell) Shown here:Attributes of NLCD land cover Value 11 = Open Water 692,997 cells

  7. Raster Calculator • Used to query grids and to perform map algebra List of grid layers in map Query expression

  8. Grid data format • Grid: ESRI’s raster data format • Manage Grid datasets using ArcCatalog only • Move, copy, paste, rename, delete

  9. Exercise 7 overview • Open blank map, add grids for WV elevation, land cover • Look at grid layer properties • Clip grids to mask (Blackwater River watershed) • Use Raster Calculator to query grids • Run Spatial Analyst surface functions: • Contours • Hillshade • Slope • Run analysis with Raster Calculator: • Model areas suitable for wind farm development

  10. Exercise 7: Modeling steps • Exercise includes steps to create a map of areas suitable for wind farm construction in the Blackwater River watershed, Tucker County: • Requirements: • Must be within 500m of a road • Must be over 1000m in elevation • Must be in private land ownership

Final class project report • Watershed Assessments using GIS: • Use of GIS to characterize your watershed • Written report describing your watershed • Include maps, figures, tables • See handout for details and assigned watershed • More details provided in next Monday’s lecture • Due Monday October 27, 9:00 am sharp
