Students will research and select a banned or challenged book for a project. They will explore opposing viewpoints on censorship and prepare an argument paper.

  2. Objective: Students will research possible novel selections for the Banned Book Project. • Please write down the warm-up. Review of This Week • There are grey areas: you frequently brought up the fact that maybe a book doesn’t need to be completely banned, but only appropriate for a certain age level or is okay for the library but maybe not taught in the classroom. • You are open to both sides of the argument. Many of you seem to understand that the other side has some valid points even if you don’t fully agree. • You came to the conclusion that you have to take into consideration the entire novel and not just excerpts taken out of context. Some things I heard this week in discussion that show me you understand the concept of censorship and can be successful in the Banned Book Project:

  4. Censorship Censorship is an ongoing struggle and controversy for the literary, music, and art communities. For this project, you will be concentrating on the literary community (obviously!). This project begins today and will culminate in a project at the beginning of of Quarter 3 and an argument paper immediately following.

Opposing Viewpoints • American Library Association • Censorship can be subtle, almost imperceptible, as well as blatant and overt, but, nonetheless, harmful. • If there is a bedrock principle underlying the First Amendment, it is that the government may not prohibit the expression of an idea simply because society finds the idea itself offensive or disagreeable. • Parents against Bad Books in Schools • Parents should be aware of what their children can or must read in school to decide whether it is appropriate for them or not.

  6. Your Assignment You will be choosing a book that has been or is currently banned or challenged. It is very important that you manage your time appropriately, so please keep in mind it would be VERY unwise to wait to read your novel at the last minute. Also, I will be “checking in” by assigning work over the Classroom App that will require you to read portions of your novel. The Due Date is 1/25, which gives you SIX weeks (and includes Winter Break).

  7. Reminders You are choosing age-appropriate books (not elementary and middle school level books) of an appropriate length (minimum 150 pgs) Consider that you will be RESEARCHING this book 3rd Quarter. It may be very difficult to find many valid sources on a book that is too new or too obscure. I will not allow multiple people to choose the same book, so first come first serve! You can give me your permission slip as early as tomorrow. I would like you to avoid books that have recently been made into movies.

  8. BYOD and Banned Books You will be examining five books today and for homework and then choosing one to read for the project. This is due on MONDAY, 12/7 along with your permission slip. I strongly suggest you take your time and choose a book of interest as you will be working with it through the beginning of Quarter 3. Each group will get several books and you will also be able to use any devices you may have to look up other books and/ or find out why books have been banned.

  9. Due Dates Monday, 12/7: Permission Slip with Book Choice DUE, 5 possible book choices assignment (half sheet) also due Have 2 book choices ready to go in case your first choice is taken/ not okayed by me (check list on my website)
