  2. Zeus • Latin Name: Zeus • Greek name: Jupiter, Jove • Born in the Diktaion cave • Parents- Kronos and Rhea Zeus with eagle & lightning, Athenian red-figure amphora C5th B.C., Musée du Louvre, Paris • I chose this picture because this is a picture of a Zeus from the time of Athens. It depicts Zeus holding his legendary lightning bolt, seemingly about to throw it. However, it looks like there is a bird, perhaps a dove, perched on his other hand. This suggests that the Athenians also knew of Zeus’s peacefulness and mercy. It suggests that Zeus is not only powerful, but also merciful- the true signs of a ruler to be worshiped.

  3. Zeus (cont.) • Attributes- a lightning bolt, royal scepter and eagle • Zeus is shown with a beard and long hair • Sphere of Influence- sky, weather, law, order, and fate Source: Stephane MallarméLes Dieux Antiques, nouvelle mythologie illustrée. Paris, 1880. • I chose this picture because this is a picture of a bust of Zeus’s head. It looks very realistic and detailed, and also three-dimensional due to the fact that it was originally a sculpture. His hair looks very curly. You can see his chiseled features and leader-like impression that made him the most powerful Olympian god. That is why I chose this picture.
