  1. The One Thing That Binds Us Together 1 Corinthians 13:1-13

  2. “This passage has been admired for ages, but unfortunately , practiced by none!” McGarvey, 1916

  3. 1 Corinthians 13:1-3 “If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing.

  4. 1 Corinthians 13:1 “If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.

  5. "all languages, human or divine." Hodge,1974

  6. “…the expression “tongues of men” is general enough to cover speech of every kind” (Morris, 1985)

  7. “It is evident that among the Corinthians the power of speaking a foreign language was regarded as a signally valuable endowment; and there can be no doubt that some of the leaders in that church valued themselves especially on it.” Barnes, 1949

  8. “To speak foreign languages was regarded then, as it is now, as a rare and valuable endowment.” Barnes, 1949

  9. 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

  10. Love is patient Let us be patient with people who speak to us in a different English accent and different level of English proficiency and of course those who do not speak Cantonese.

  11. Love is kind Let us be kind, not just our own kinds, but even to those of different kinds. ;)

  12. Love does not envy, it does not boast and is not proud Let us not be envious of the majority (if we are in the minority) and let us not be boastful or proud, if we are THE majority.

  13. Love is not rude. It is not self-seeking Let us not be rude but be respectful of cultures (and “many sub-cultures”) and let us not be self-centered.

  14. Love is not easily angered and does not keep a record of wrongs Let us keep our cool, let go of bitterness and let us not be shackled with the past.

  15. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth Let us not compromise but let us be truthful to each other.

  16. Love always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. We are a family. Let us not be suspicious of each other but let us look forward to the future as together we continue in our walk with the Lord.

  17. 1 Corinthians 13: 8-12 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears. When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me. Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

  18. 1 Corinthians 13: 8-12 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

  19. The One Thing That Binds Us Together is love.
