  4. PROJECT STATEMENT For the final project I will be combining my ideas/concept from the montage and map projects. The basic concept behind both projects is my family and their journey to America. In this final piece I would like to display pictures of my family from when they were in Vietnam, to when they arrived here in the U.S. in the early 1980s, and current pictures of how my family has grown and thrived since arriving 30+ years ago. In addition to the personal display, I want to show my grandparent’s journey to America; similar to the concept of the map project but not exactly the same. As everyone can probably tell by now, my family inspires me a lot and seeing how hard my grandparents has worked motivates me to do well in life. Telling their story through my artwork this semester helped me learn more details about their journey and of their struggles from the time they stepped on that boat to escape Vietnam, to miraculously landing on Tioman Island in Malaysia, then to the refugee camp in Malaysia, and when they arrived here in America. I thought I knew almost every detail of their journey, but after gathering information for the projects and hearing the complete story from my grandparents and my dad, I was in complete awe because it is hard to believe that they survived through all of the unimaginable situations. These projects and this final project are just little snippets of the history of my family. Although there is so much more I could display in many additional projects in detail, hopefully this final piece will be able to show their story in a different way along with some other details that were not shown before. As a finance major, I’ve never really had the chance to get in touch with my artsy side or share anything personal in a non-verbal way. So being that this may be the last time during my college career that I’ll be able to work on a project like this, I am going to try my best to create a strong piece that will tell the story in a different perspective with a little more detailed than before.
