  2. The Covenants of God • Proper understanding of the nature and purposes of the covenants of God is essential to “rightly dividing the word of truth”, 2 Tim 2:15 • Much misuse: Catholics and Protestants, Sabbatarians, Premillennialists, Mormons, JW’s, etc., and even some brethren • Faith is strengthened and assured by knowing the role of the Old Testament law

  3. The Law of Moses • First / Old Covenant, Heb 8:6-9, 13 • Who? Israel, Rom 9:4; Deut 5:1-3 • Prepare to send Savior, Gen 22:18; Exo 19:5-6; Gal 4:4-5 • What? Deut 4:10-14 • How long? Gal 3:19 (16), 24-25 • “Added” to the promise until the Seed came • New covenant promised, dedicated and now in force, Heb 8:6; 9:15-17

  5. What the LOM Accomplished • Tutor to bring men to Christ, Gal 3:23-25 “Among the Greeks and the Romans the name was applied to trustworthy slaves who were charged with the duty of supervising the life and morals of boys belonging to the better class. The boys were not allowed so much as to step out of the house without them before arriving at the age of manhood.” (Thayer)

  6. What the LOM Accomplished • Tutor to bring men to Christ, Gal 3:23-25 • Guarded and disciplined the Hebrews: • Taught purity and holiness, Heb 9:13 (Num 19) • Taught obedience Deut 10:12-13 (27:26) • Taught that sin brings punishment, Lev 18:24-30 • Taught the blessings of faith and obedience, Deut 28:1-2, 15

  7. What the LOM Accomplished • Tutor to bring men to Christ, Gal 3:23-25 • Taught Israel about sin: • Identified and warned, Rom 3:20 (11:32) • Need for redemption, Heb 10:1-3 • Showed that death of innocent was needed to redeem the guilty, Heb 9:22 • LOM provided no adequate sacrifice, Heb 10:1-4 • Taught of coming Savior, 2 Tim 3:15; Acts 17:2-4

  8. What LOM Is Not For Today • Not for the sinner’s salvation, Rom 3:20- 26; Gal 2:21; 3:21 • Inheritance of the promise not by the law, Gal 3:18 • Could not “perfect” (complete, finish) sinners, Heb 10:1 • Christ and His new covenant do, Heb 10:14-18 • Not our binding authority, Matt 17:5; Col 2:14-17; Acts 15:10-11

  10. The Law of Moses • With this knowledge, we understand: • Where to learn how to be saved, Rom 1:16 • Where to learn how to worship, Jno 4:21-23 • Where to find authority for all we do, Col 3:17 • How to properly use and benefit from the Old Testament, Rom 15:4
