American Literature – MondayWeek Eight • TPCASTT: “I Hear America Singing” • T: Title (questions and brainstorming on the title) • P: Paraphrasing (put each stanza into your own words) • C: Connotations (look carefully at diction [word choice] and any use of figurative language, such as metaphors and symbols; also, listen for interesting sound devices such as alliteration and rhyme)

What do you infer was the purpose of the Harlem Renaissance, based upon this essay? • 2. What is Hughes' main argument about one's culture and heritage, and do you agree? • 3. Highlight and comment on what you see as Hughes’ thesis.
