IEEE CS Standards Demonstrator Elevator Pitch: Two problems One solution IEEE CS Standards Demonstrator
Problem #1: Data, Data Everywhere The Context The Problem • Internet of things + Internet of media = Unprecedented data • Unprecedented data + NLP + Data mining + A.I. + Pattern recognition = Endless possibilities • Patient monitoring in homes • Collaborative learning using real time data • Workplace risk assessment and prevention • … • Applications require integration of multiple layers (hardware, communication, data modeling, UI/UX) • Integration requires standardization across traditional “silos” The Opportunity • Create standards synergy • Show the value of infrastructure and software engineering through compelling applications IEEE CS Standards Demonstrator
Problem #2: The World Wild West The Context The Problem • Web applications ranging from CRM and e-commerce to social media, electronic health records and educational e-portfolios are woven together APIs • APIs are published by application developers and service providers. Web 3.0 is woven together with them. • Developers and manufacturers enterprise software and consumer products rely on the APIs • The APIs require • Proper structure • Adequate error messaging • Standardized data models • Life cycle maintenance • Complete documentation The Opportunity • Promote and provide tools for API standardization • Demonstrate additional standards synergy • Be the leader IEEE CS Standards Demonstrator
Requirements • Multiple organizations collaborate to demonstrate complete solutions based on multiple standards. (“Standards Synergy”) • Create opportunities to try out draft standards, new APIs and multiple systems • Create framework for API standardization • Demonstrate leadership role of IEEE CS & SA • Demonstrate how infrastructure and standards contribute to end-user applications in health, education, security, etc. IEEE CS Standards Demonstrator
SOLUTION (“Standards Demonstrator”) • Environment & support for concrete projects that involve multiple standards and organizations. Examples: • Design and implement an API for monitoring health related data via wireless networks. Demonstrate application that uses this data. • Use agent standards to enable students to collect and collaboratively study data using mobile devices. • Process for API standardization in context of concrete projects • Public-facing site • Internal coordination IEEE CS Standards Demonstrator
Status • PIF not been funded but encouraged • Gathering corporate and agency contacts (testing waters) • One concrete proposal (MAD for Learning) – see next slide. • Discussion … IEEE CS Standards Demonstrator
Machine Actionable Data for Learning • 1484.11.1 + FIPA + P2200 (High Quality Mobile Entertainment) • Adaptation of the plug-and-play learning activity model to a mobile operating system context. Supports: • Overview of a problem domain • Individual field data collection • Group viewing of aggregated data • Problem space: Any problem that integrates field data collection with learning: Agricultural productivity, public health, K12 environmental studies, emergency response. • Goal: Brand as an IEEE Global Humanitarian Technology Project. Aim for a compelling demonstration in time for the next IEEE GHTC conference one year from now. IEEE CS Standards Demonstrator
